The Dormouse House, a unique accommodation in Slovenia

Once a homestead, now a holiday cottage

Imagine stepping through a centuries-old door. Instantly, you feel like you stepped back in time. While the Dormouse house reminds of a museum; this authentic Slovenian homestead is now a holiday cottage!

The house dates back to the end of the 18th century. We recently renovated it as a family holiday cottage in the heart of the Notranjska region in Slovenia. Welcome to the Dormouse house!

The holiday cottage is situated in the village of Goričice, which rises above the southeastern edge of Lake Cerknica. Due to its location, the Dormouse house offers an ideal starting point from where you can explore Slovenia. Nearby, you can visit Lake Cerknica, the Rakov Škocjan ravine, the Križna Cave, Postojna Cave, mount Snežnik (the highest mountain peak outside the Alps) and the Snežnik Castle.

Inside the Dormouse House in Slovenia

The history of the Dormouse House

The Dormouse house is built at the end of the 18th century, and the main room’s wooden ceiling bears the year 1791. Imagine that the history of the house goes back to a time when it stood in the Illyrian provinces of Napoleon’s empire! The house was the central building of the Češnovec homestead in Goričice. Try to think of a foreigner pronouncing this, and you understand why we gave the house the “market” name Dormouse house.

Our family owns the Dormouse house since the middle of the last century. Although there are more old houses in Notranjska, this is one of the best-preserved buildings in the region. It has rightfully been declared a cultural monument of local significance.

The Dormouse house is one of the few remaining houses with a straw-covered roof. The interior has an exceptional architecture with a high, vaulted ceiling. In the central room, you find a bread oven, which can be operated from an authentic “black” kitchen. When we renovated the building, we were careful to preserve the old elements, while we also modernized it so that it became a pleasant holiday cottage. Thus, we arranged a moderate modern kitchen and a bathroom in the part of the hallway. We also added electric heating panels and wireless internet to the living areas.

maintaining traditions and nature

Your hosts, Jana and Paul, proudly continue a tradition which is started by Jana’s grandfather. He bought the historical homestead and took care of its preservation for many years. Jana’s mother, Breda, continued the care for the house, and in 2019 we took over the management of the Dormouse house.

Together, we work in nature conservation for more than 15 years. Through our work, we learned that nature will only be preserved when people can experience it first-hand. For this reason, we started with ecotourism and, in 2016, our firm, Institute Symbiosis, became a specialised tour agency as well. Besides renting out the Dormouse house, we also offer single- and multi-day trips with an emphasis on observing nature. Institute Symbiosis is a non-profit business, and we use surplus revenues to implement our nature conservation projects.

Sleeping like a dormouse

Dormice are common rodents in Slovenia, especially in inland forests. They are slightly smaller than a squirrel, with grey fur. They are known for sleeping soundly during the day and waking up only in the middle of the night. In winter, dormice sleep even longer, as they have a real hibernation and do not wake up for seven months.

This is why in Slovene, as well as in many other languages, the saying “sleeping like a dormouse” has taken hold. We are sure that you will experience the same in the Dormouse house. The house has thick stone walls, so it is never too hot in the summer. At the same time, it is quiet in the house for a sound holiday sleep.

However, this is not our only reason to name the house after dormice. For a while, our ancestors used it as a museum about the Slovene tradition of dormouse hunting. Later, their museum collection moved to a building next to the Snežnik Castle, where it is still on display today.
